Call reporting an erratic driver results in arrest
/After a caller told a dispatcher about a disoriented driver headed north into Bloomfield on US 231, driving in the wrong lane, a Bloomfield officer responded and located the vehicle. The driver ended up in jail and has been charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Yvette Sheffer, 56, of Solsberry, was the driver of a 1990 Subaru Legacy that was reported to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department close to 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 23, by someone who said the car was traveling in the wrong lane of traffic near the Dollar Store on the south edge of Bloomfield.
Lt. Marvin Holt of the Bloomfield Police Department was dispatched and located the vehicle. He said it stopped at the intersection of Main and Washington streets, for a green light, then headed east on State Road 54 with Holt following to observe.
Near the county highway garage on SR 54 East, Holt said the vehicle drove off the side of the road and it first appeared they were pulling over to let the officer pass, but Sheffer drove into a ditch, the car bottomed out, then came to a stop across a driveway. Holt stopped and approached the car.
Holt reported the odor of alcohol and he saw several empty beer cans in the floorboard, and saw a male passenger who appeared to be very intoxicated.
Sheffer allegedly said she just wanted to go home and admitted she had too much to drink and probably shouldn’t have been driving.
Holt said when she was asked to step outside the vehicle, she almost fell onto the road, then almost fell again when told to rest up against his patrol vehicle.
Standard field sobriety testing was started then stopped for safety reasons both on the scene and at the jail. She was unable to successfully take a breath test but agreed to a blood draw – results are pending.
Sheffer was arrested and booked in. Her bond was set at $4,000 surety with ten percent allowed. She posted $400 cash and was released.
This week on Thursday morning, August 30, she appeared in Greene Superior Court for her initial hearing and was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor.
