Bloomfield man facing new felony charge after failing to follow judge's order

A Bloomfield man convicted of felony possession of methamphetamine got a pretty good deal with most of his sentence suspended. But he failed to show up at the Greene County Jail to serve the executed part of his sentence and now he's facing a new felony charge and the possibility that his suspended sentence could be revoked.

Michael Lee Boyd, 37, Bloomfield, was most recently arrested by Deputy Bruce Porter of the Green County Sheriff's Department last Friday morning, March 17. Previously he was arrested by GCSD Deputy Sergeant Jordan Allor back on March 12 of 2022. He is currently facing two criminal cases as a result and is expected to appear in Greene Superior Court in both cases tomorrow afternoon.

The earlier arrest in 2022 occurred when Sergeant Allor and Deputy Caleb Sipes interacted with Boyd on Wilkie School Rd. in Bloomfield when they were actually investigating another incident. Boyd was in the driver’s seat of a 2010 Chevrolet Impala and a woman was in the passenger seat. Sergeant Allor recognized Boyd and knew he had a warrant out for his arrest issued out of Owen County. The passenger, Allisann Jayne, also had a warrant out for her arrest issued out of Owen County. They were both taken into custody.

During this process, Sergeant Allor saw a black digital scale on the center console of the car and noticed a white crystal substance on the driver’s seat. Allor reported that when Boyd was searched before transport, he was found with a clear glass smoking device containing white residue in a jacket pocket and a clear plastic bag containing a white crystal substance from the watch pocket in his pants.

Boyd was subsequently charged with:

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

He bonded out of jail then failed to appear at a pretrial conference in July of 2022, was arrested, then bonded out again.

By mid-December, he had been evaluated for alternative sentencing on work release and signed a negotiated plea agreement.

A change of plea hearing was successfully conducted on February 23. Under the terms of the agreement, Count 2 was dismissed and Boyd admitted guilt on Count 1. He was sentenced to one year and 180 days in the county jail but was given credit for 27 days already served and one year and 30 days were suspended. He was given the date of March 1 to report to the jail by 6 p.m. to serve his jail time.

Then on March 2, the court was notified that Boyd failed to appear for his sentencing as ordered and his whereabouts were unknown. Another warrant was issued for his arrest.

In addition, a new criminal case was filed against Boyd for failure to return to lawful detention, a Level 6 felony.

So Boyd was arrested last Friday on two warrants, one for failure to appear at the jail in the first case and where the Greene County Probation Department has filed a petition to revoke his suspended sentence and the other for the new case involving failure to return to lawful detention. His bond was set at $4000 surety with 10% cash allowed in the newest case but in the earlier case, he's been held without bond.

Boyd is expected to appear in Greene Superior Court tomorrow afternoon, March 23, to face the charges in both cases.
