80 year old man accused of theft and criminal trespassing

An 80 year old man is accused of stealing a cart full of items from a local store and criminal trespassing because he was previously warned that he was not allowed on the property.

A summons was issued and sent via signature confirmation mail this week to Larry Gene Curtis, 80, Jasonville, ordering him to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing on October 13 to face charges of theft, a Class A misdemeanor, and criminal trespassing, a Class A misdemeanor.

Officer Wayman JR Blazier of the Linton Police Department was dispatched to a traffic accident in the Walmart parking lot on August 4. The striking vehicle had left the scene but an asset protection associate told the officer that the driver was in the store and he had tried to leave without paying for a cart full of items.

Officer Blazier was familiar with Curtis from a previous incident and knew he had been trespassed from the store and was not allowed on the property. The asset protection associate said Curtis had taken his cart full of items out of the store into the vestibule and then turned around and came back into the store to get another item before he was confronted.

Curtis allegedly told the officer that he was going to pay for his items and that his wife needed him to bring them home but the store would not allow him to purchase the items and just wanted him out of the store.

Curtis also allegedly said that he knew about the no trespassing order he had signed during the last incident but he said the charges were dropped and the judge told him that he could go back to Walmart. Officer Blazier told him that the trespass order was still valid and he is not allowed on the property. Curtis was released from the scene but told that he will be contacted by the court.

Officer Blazier reported the items in the cart included six 6-packs of Doctor Pepper, a package of Purina Beggin, a 12-pack Ole Roy canned dog food and other groceries with a total cost of $138.24.
