Earl Lee “Sonny” Stephens

Earl Lee “Sonny” Stephens, age 87, of Indianapolis passed away at his home on Wednesday April 23rd, 2025.  Born August 6th, 1937, in Linton, Indiana. He was the son of Leo and Marie (Cunningham) Stephens. 

Earl was affectionately given the nickname ”Sonny” by his father.  That is the name many knew him by. In high school, he worked at the famous Greek’s Cafe in Linton and after that he went to work at the Rexall Drug Store, behind the counter as a “Soda Jerk”.  He then went on to serve in the United States Air Force during the time of the Berlin Crisis. He was part of the113th Tactical Fighter Squadron.  It was said he looked quite handsome in uniform.  After receiving an Honorable Discharge, he went to work at Allsion Transmission in the Aircraft Division in Indianapolis, from where he retired. 

Surviving relatives include his spouse, Garl Richard ”Rich” (Vaughan) Stephens. His children Suann Wheeler (Alan) of Clayton, IN and Michelle Stephens of Indianapolis, IN. His granddaughter Danielle Day & great granddaughter Harlan Day of Monrovia, IN. His sister Edna Troup (Dan) of Linton. And many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Shirley Stephens and Loudona “Dona” Stephens. His brother Larry “Butch” Stephens. 

Graveside services will be held on Friday May 16th at 1 pm, at Fairview Cemetery, Linton IN.
