Dr. Bob E. Smiley
/Dr. Bob E. Smiley, 85, of Bloomington, formerly of Linton, Indiana, went peacefully to Heaven surrounded by family on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at his home. He was born on October 22, 1934 in Bloomington to James Robert Smiley and Dorothy (Harding) Parrot. Bob married Effie Belle (Mowery) Smiley on August 17, 1956 and after her passing married Betsy (Eads) Smiley on October 21, 2014.
Bob was a US Navy veteran. His memberships include life member of both the IEEE and the Linton American Legion Post #22, VFW Post #7118 and the Daniel Guthrie Post of the Indiana Society Sons of the American Revolution, where he was a past President and the American Marketing Association. Bob had served as a volunteer board member for the Wabash Valley Red Cross, the CB Girl Scout Council and was Executive VP/Treasurer for the International Association for Business Simulation and Experiential Learning. He organized and served on the board of the Wabash Valley Marketing Association, serving three years as president. Most recently, he served as treasurer of the Hoosier Base, US Submarine Veterans, Inc. Bob held licenses as a First-Class Radiotelephone Operator (Commercial Broadcast) and Indiana Real Estate Broker.
Dr. Smiley earned his PhD at Purdue University in 1978. He holds his MBA (Marketing) and BA (Statistics) from Cal State University in Fullerton, CA. Bob retired from ISU as a professor in the Marketing Department, where he held positions as Department Chairman and MBA Coordinator. He also worked as a Field Engineer for Raytheon Company, Computer Designer for Beckman Instruments and served as a substitute teacher in the WRV school system.
Family left to cherish the memory of Bob include: his wife, Betsy Smiley; two sons, Brent (Ann) Smiley of Pierceton and Bryan (Michele) Smiley of Bloomington; step-children, Kim Nistelbeck of Bloomington, Curtis Clark of Columbus and Matthew Clark of Seattle; three grandchildren, Timothy Smiley of Bloomington, Shelby Smiley and Garrett Smiley, both of Warsaw.
Bob was preceded in death by: his first wife of 57 years, Effie Smiley; his parents, Dorothy (Sam) Parrot and Jim (Katie) Smiley; one son, Steve Eric Smiley and one brother, J.D. Smiley.
Funeral services to honor the life of Bob will be at 1:00 PM on Monday, March 23, 2020 at Anderson-Poindexter Chapel in Linton with Jeremy Vance and Jim Barr officiating. Bob will be laid to rest in Stafford Cemetery in Sandborn.
Immediate family visitation will be from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM on Sunday, March 22 and from 12 Noon until the time of service at 1:00 PM on Monday at the funeral home.
