Woman who overdosed charged with possession of narcotic drug

A woman who was found unresponsive and not breathing earlier this spring was successfully revived with Narcan and transported to the hospital. Yesterday she was in court facing two felony charges for alleged possession of fentanyl and syringes.

Samantha Le Cassidy

Samantha Le Cassidy, 27, Bloomfield, was arrested last Friday, June 17, and booked into the Greene County Jail at 1:54 PM on a warrant issued as a result of an investigation by Deputy James Carpenter of the Greene County Sheriff's Department into an incident that occurred in March.

Deputy Carpenter was dispatched at 9:25 AM on Sunday, March 6, to a residence on East State Road 54, Bloomfield, as EMS was responding to a report that a woman had overdosed on heroin. A family member had administered two shots of Narcan and said the woman was breathing.

When Deputy Carpenter arrived, Indiana Conservation Officer Cole Hollingsworth said he had assisted the woman outside to the ambulance but she was now alert. The ambulance crew said they would be transporting the woman, identified as Samantha Cassidy, to Greene County General Hospital.

Another family member told Deputy Carpenter he was getting ready to leave when he found Cassidy not breathing on the bathroom floor. The other family member then administered Narcan. He was asked if they saw anything laying in the bathroom from Cassidy using drugs, The conservation officer said he did not see anything and the family member did not see anything but he said Cassidy usually carries a purse with flowers on it. The man went to look for the purse but could not find it. He asked the deputy if he found drugs, what should he do with them? The deputy told him to contact the sheriff's department.

Later that morning, the family member came to the sheriff's department with the bag and said he found the bag under some clothes in the bedroom Cassidy had been staying in. He said when he opened it, he saw syringes and a small zip bag with powder in it. The bag was seized for evidence.

Deputy Carpenter reported that when the bag was inventoried, it contained 12 syringes, a metal spoon, a rubber tourniquet, a small zip bag of a powdered substance that was then sent to the Indiana State Police Laboratory for testing.

This month the results came back from the lab showing the powder substance contained fentanyl, a controlled substance.

This information was forwarded to the Greene County Prosecutors Office and a criminal case was filed against Cassidy. After her arrest, she was initially held without bond pending court appearance.

Yesterday, Tuesday, June 21, Cassidy appeared in Greene Superior Court for her initial hearing. A public defender was appointed to represent her and her bond was set at $10,000 surety with 10% cash allowed. She was charged with:

  • Possession of a narcotic drug, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Unlawful possession of syringe, a Level 6 felony.
