Tara Kaye Helton, 48, Linton, was arrested on Wednesday, January 8, by Officer Adam King of the Linton Police Department.

Around 9:42 p.m. Wednesday, Officer King initiated a traffic stop on a 2004 silver Ford Escape with an inoperable license plate light. Helton was the driver.

During the stop, at the intersection of A Street NE and the Linton Shopping Center, LPD Officer Joe Riley arrived with his K-9 Kona to assist on the scene. Officer King requested the K-9 be deployed to do a free air sniff around the vehicle and Officer Riley said the K-9 alerted.

Officer King reported that during a search of the vehicle, they found a glass smoking device in the driver’s door compartment. It had a white residue. On the passenger seat, they found a ziplock bag inside a pink change purse. The bag contained a white crystal substance that field-tested positive as methamphetamine.

Helton was advised of her rights then declined to speak to the officers. She was transported to the Greene County Jail where she was booked in at 10:27 p.m. She was being held without bond pending her appearance in court for an initial hearing.

She is facing a preliminary charge of possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony.

Helton was arrested previously, on Friday, December 20, under similar circumstances, by a different officer. She was charged with possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony, and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor. She posted bond and was released. That case is still pending.
