Woman accused of trying to con the county auditor
/A woman who had one check issued to her from the county allegedly tried to tell the auditor she never got it. A deputy says he has evidence she’d already cashed it when she asked for another check.
Tamera Dawn Crosley, 25, formerly of Linton, now Carlisle, was arrested on a warrant that was issued last Friday. She was booked in around 2 p.m. Saturday, February 1, to the Greene County Jail where her bond was set at $4,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. She posted $400 and was released.
Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy James Carpenter has been investigating since he was dispatched to the Greene County Auditor’s Office in the courthouse last Tuesday, January 28, to talk to Greene County Auditor Matt Baker about a theft.
Auditor Matt Baker told the deputy that Greene Superior Court had issued an order to release funds of $300 to Tamera Crosley from the Greene County Drug and Alcohol Services. This order was issued in connection to a previous felony case involving Crosley. Baker provided evidence that the Greene County Treasurer’s Office issued a check for $300 to Crosley on December 3.
Baker explained that on Wednesday, January 22, Crosley contacted the auditor’s office and allegedly said she had never received the check. Baker contacted the Treasurer’s Office and learned the check had not yet been cashed. So, the check was voided and his office issued another check for $300 to Crosley.
Baker subsequently was contacted by Baesler’s in Sullivan about Crosley cashing checks.
After talking to the auditor, Deputy Carpenter went to Baesler’s in Sullivan to obtain video from the store’s surveillance system.
Deputy Carpenter reported video shows Crosley cashing the first check at Baesler’s around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, the day before she called the auditor’s office and claimed she didn’t get the check.
Deputy Carpenter also reported an additional video shows that on Monday, January 27, around 5:30 p.m., Crosley went back to the same store and cashed the second check at the service desk.
Deputy Carpenter said that when Crosley contacted the auditor’s office, she knew she had already cashed the first check and it was not lost. He said she gave false information, knowing the check was not missing.
Deputy Carpenter attempted to contact Crosley by phone with no success.
He noted that Crosley’s criminal history includes a conviction in Greene County in 2014 for conspiracy to commit theft. Court records indicate Crosley was charged in 2019 with another Level 6 felony theft in Vigo County. That case is still pending. She was also convicted in Greene County in 2014 of false informing in connection with Randal Crosley’s conviction for the murder of Katelyn Wolfe.
In the latest case, Crosley is facing a preliminary charge of theft, with a prior conviction for theft, a Level 6 felony. She is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing on Thursday morning, February 13.
