Robert James Bateman, 41, Washington, Ind., was arrested by Officer Orry Phipps of the Linton Police Department on Sunday, September 13.

Around 3:25 on Sunday afternoon, Officer Phipps responded to a report of a trespasser at a residence on SE 6th Street in Linton. Bateman was identified as the trespasser and just the day before, Bateman had been given notice by LPD Officer Kyle Robison to not trespass on the property - on Saturday September 12.

Officer Phipps located Bateman at the corner of SE 6th Street and SE A Street, riding on the back of an ATV being operated by a juvenile. Officer Phipps hit the emergency lights and the juvenile driver pulled over on the side of the road near SE 3rd Street and A Street.

The juvenile told Officer Phipps that he didn’t know this guy but he had asked for a ride and the juvenile agreed to give him a ride.

Bateman was ordered to get off the ATV. He refused. Bateman was ordered again to get off the ATV. This time he got off.

Bateman allegedly admitted he was at the property to leave his phone number for his girlfriend and that he had just left and was going to leave town. He acknowledged knowing he was not supposed to be at the property. Officer Phipps reported Bateman said several times that he was not going to jail, he was just going home, and then he took off running.

Bateman ran north through a yard. Officer Phipps yelled for him to stop but Bateman kept on running. Officer Phipps was able to catch up to Bateman and Bateman ended up on the ground. Once down, Bateman allegedly kept pulling his arms away and pushing the officer away while the officer was trying to handcuff Bateman. Officer Phipps reported he tazed Bateman and then was able to get the handcuffs on.

Greene County Rescue was called to do a medical check of Bateman before he was transported to jail but during that check, Bateman allegedly indicated he wanted to harm himself and so LPD Officer Adam King transported Bateman to Greene County General Hospital to be evaluated. Bateman was cleared by hospital medical staff then transported to jail.

Bateman was booked in at 6:08 p.m. Sunday. His bond was set at $2,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. As of late Wednesday, he had not yet posted bond and remained in jail.

Bateman has been charged with:

  • Resisting law enforcement – knowingly or intentionally forcibly resists, a Class A misdemeanor, and

  • Criminal trespassing, a Class A misdemeanor.
