Terre Haute woman accused of going through a vehicle in Linton

A woman who was staying with a family member in Linton is accused of going through a neighbor’s vehicle without permission. After she was arrested on a misdemeanor charge, she bonded out with a date to appear in court. She was a no-show so now there’s a warrant out for her arrest.

Bethany Dawn Stines

Bethany Dawn Stines, 34, Terre Haute, was arrested in Linton by Officer Bobby Pierce on Tuesday, November 2. Her bond was set at $500 surety with ten percent cash allowed. She posted $50, was given a day and time to show up in Greene Superior Court for her initial hearing, then released later the same day as her arrest.

On the day of her initial hearing, this past Monday, November 8, Stines failed to appear and a warrant was issued for her arrest.

Officer Pierce began an investigation on November 2 when a Linton resident reported she and her husband had caught a woman going through their vehicle. She said her husband was outside with the woman and she was afraid the situation was going to escalate, but by the time Officer Pierce arrived, the woman had left and was walking along State Road 54.

When Officer Pierce talked to the residents, they said earlier when a friend arrived at their residence, the friend noticed someone standing near their vehicle but they took off running when he pulled in. Then when the husband went outside a little later, a woman was inside his vehicle and they called police. They believed the woman had been staying in Linton with a family member who lived next door.

While Officer Pierce was talking to them, LPD Officers Zachary Goad and Cayden Walker located the woman walking along the highway toward Casey’s gas station. She was identified as Bethany Stines.

Stines allegedly said her father had left to get a vehicle so he could give her a ride back to Terre Haute and when she noticed the vehicle in a nearby parking area, she thought it must be the vehicle he got and she opened the door to see if he was inside. She said she couldn’t see inside the vehicle and that she didn’t steal anything and wasn’t going to steal the vehicle. Officer Pierce noted the vehicle’s windows were not tinted and the interior was easily visible from the outside.

Stines was taken into custody and booked into the Greene County Jail at 12:59 p.m.

She is facing a charge of unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, a Class B misdemeanor.
