Terre Haute man arrested after accident in Bloomfield
/A 42-year-old Terre Haute man was arrested in the early morning hours of Oct. 6 on alcohol-related charges after he was involved in a one-vehicle accident at the intersection of East Antioch Road and South U.S. Highway 231 in Bloomfield.
When Greene County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Jordan Allor was dispatched to the one-vehicle accident at approximately 9 p.m. on Oct. 5. Upon arrival, the driver – later identified as Carl J. Langer – was in the driver’s seat moving his head around. The vehicle was off the roadway against a fence post. According to the probable cause affidavit, Allor knocked on the window of the vehicle several times with no response. In addition, the vehicle’s radio was turned up loud and two dogs were inside.
Greene County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Caleb Sipes arrived on scene and he and Sgt. Allor attempted to have Langer put the car in park. According to the probable cause affidavit, he would lay his head down and talk to his dogs. Langer then leaned over and opened the passenger door. Officers observed an open bottle of vodka sitting in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. Allor wrote in the probable cause affidavit that Langer was told several times to place the vehicle in park but did not comply; therefore, Allor reached inside the vehicle and turned it off.
Langer had to crawl out of the vehicle’s passenger side as the driver’s side was up against a fence post. While asking Langer to exit the vehicle, Allor allegedly noticed slurred speech and an odor of an alcoholic beverage.
According to the probable cause, Allor was informed by Greene County Dispatch that Langer had a suspended license due to a previous conviction of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and failure to provide proof of insurance in July 2023 in Sullivan County.
Due to a pre-existing medical condition, he was transported to Greene County General Hospital for evaluation. Allor met Langer at the hospital and received his consent for a chemical test as well as a blood test. The chemical test results showed .358. Blood draw results are pending.
During the blood draw, Langer said he was coming from Montgomery and had been drinking whiskey. When asked how much, he alleged “A lot. A s**t load.”
Langer was transported to Greene County Jail where his bond was set at $8,000 surety with 10% cash allowed.
He appeared in Greene Superior Court on Oct. 19. He faces charges of:
