Teen arrested on OWI charges after leaving the scene of accident
/A Lyons teen was arrested after authorities say he left the scene of a crash and was later found to be intoxicated.
According to court documents, Gavin J. Gilstrap, 19, faces preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated endangerment, operating while intoxicated, and illegal possession of alcohol.
Deputy Zachary Goad of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office reported he was traveling on State Road 54 around 8:09 p.m. March 27 when he observed debris in the roadway, including mud, grass and a large piece of plastic.
According to the affidavit, tire tracks led from the roadway through a ditch and yard before returning to the road, indicating a vehicle had left the scene of a crash.
Shortly after, a witness directed deputies to a nearby parking lot at the intersection of State Road 54 and County Road 250 West, where a black 2016 Chrysler 200 registered to Gilstrap was located.
Gilstrap was found standing next to the vehicle, which had flat tires and visible mud. He told deputies he had hit a pothole, though officers reported not observing any potholes in the area.
While speaking with Gilstrap, deputies noted slurred speech and detected the odor of alcohol coming from his breath. Gilstrap denied drinking and declined to perform field sobriety tests and a portable breath test.
According to the affidavit, Gilstrap later consented to a blood draw after being read Indiana’s implied consent law.
He was transported to Greene County General Hospital, where a blood sample was collected before he was taken to the Greene County Jail.
Deputies reported Gilstrap later admitted to drinking three to four beers prior to driving.
Gilstrap was arrested March 27. He is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing on April 6.
