Springville man faces felony charge after crash injures passenger
/A 20-year-old Springville man faces multiple alcohol-related charges after crashing his vehicle last month.
Brandon Chase Alexander Jones was arrested Feb. 21 and is charged with causing serious bodily injury while operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Level 5 felony; operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor; operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor; and operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to at least 0.08 but less than 0.15, a Class C misdemeanor.
Greene County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Jordan Allor responded to the crash on East State Road 54, east of County Road East in Bloomfield. According to a probable cause affidavit, officers arrived to find a 2017 silver Ford Escape on its side down an embankment.
Jones was identified as the driver, per the affidavit. A passenger was found lying on the ground, bleeding from the face. They were transported by ambulance to a Bloomington hospital.
While speaking with Jones, Allor detected the odor of alcohol on his breath, according to the affidavit. Jones claimed he had consumed one shot approximately two hours before the crash.
Allor conducted a partial standardized field sobriety test but did not complete all tests due to weather and roadway conditions. Jones failed the portions that were performed, the affidavit states. A preliminary breath test showed a result of 0.130.
Jones was transported to the sheriff’s department for additional testing, including a standardized field sobriety test in a controlled environment. He failed those tests as well, per the affidavit. A chemical test later showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.110.
On Feb. 23, Allor followed up with the passenger in the hospital. They admitted to drinking before the crash, the affidavit states. At the time of hospitalization, they were being treated for a fractured nose, internal bleeding, and a possible concussion from the accident.
Allor was assisted by Greene County Sheriff’s Department Deputies Caleb Sipes and Andrew Weeks, along with Bloomfield Police Department Deputy Marshal Jordan Brant.
Upon his arrest, Jones was held without bond. He appeared in Greene Superior Court via two-way video for his initial hearing on Feb. 25.
