Solsberry man charged with meth possession

A Solsberry man who was stopped in Lyons on Sunday night was arrested and booked into jail. Deputes say he was in possession of over five grams of methamphetamine.

Matthew David Spencer, 46, Solsberry, was arrested by Deputy Jordan Allor of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department on Sunday, November 15.

Deputy Allor was southbound on State Road 67 around 8 p.m. Sunday, traveling behind a 1995 Buick Century. When they got into Lyons and the Buick suddenly turned right onto Wine Street without using a turn signal, then pulled into the Petro Plus station, Deputy Allor initiated a traffic stop for failure to signal a turn.

Spencer was identified as the driver who said he didn’t need to use his turn signal because he was just pulling into the gas station.

Spencer had a state identification card but no driver’s license – it was suspended. Spencer also had a warrant out for his arrest issued out of Lawrence County for driving while suspended with a prior and he has a previous conviction for driving while suspended. In addition, the license plate on the vehicle did not belong on the vehicle.

Spencer was taken into custody and the required inventory was taken of the vehicle prior to towing.

GCSD Deputies Alan Jackson and Devan Goad also arrived to assist and during the inventory, deputies reported finding a plastic cup in the center console with a green plant material and a smoking device under the driver’s seat that had a white powder residue.

On the rear floorboard, they located a Tupperware container that contained a green plant material and a Ziploc bag that contained a white crystal substance. It tested positive as methamphetamine and weighed in at 5.07 grams.

Other items of paraphernalia were located in the trunk.

Spencer said the vehicle belonged to a friend but he would not say the name of the friend. When asked about the marijuana and methamphetamine, he again said the vehicle was not his vehicle.

Spencer was booked in at 9:18 p.m. and was held without bond pending court appearance.

When he appeared in Greene Superior Court this afternoon, Tuesday, November 17, he was charged with:

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony,

  • Driving while suspended – a knowing violation with a prior conviction within 10 years,

  • Possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor, and

  • Possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

A public defender was appointed to represent him and his bond was set at $6,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He is also being held without bond on the warrant out of Lawrence County.
