The years to serve in prison keep adding up for an incarcerated child molester convicted of numerous sex crimes involving children in Greene County. He had substantial time to serve but while behind bars, twice he’s confessed to more molestations which led to more convictions and more time in prison.

Steven Bryce Kristler, 31, was convicted of child molesting, a Class A felony, in Greene Circuit Court last week. With Judge Erik Allen on the bench, Kristler pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

In the past, records have shown Kristler with a home address in Linton and in Worthington, but he’s currently incarcerated at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City. He’s been there for a while.

Kristler has a record of sex offenses involving children and a record of convictions for both child molestations and sexual misconduct with a minor.

The latest case involving Kristler came about because he confessed in prison to abusing a child back in 2010. This was not his first jailhouse confession. He’s done this before.

Back in 2014, when Kristler was incarcerated and serving time in the New Castle Correctional Facility, he wrote a letter to Julie Criger, an investigator at the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office, and confessed to several other incidents of sexually abusing children.

His allegations were investigated and as a result, he was charged with 11 counts ranging from Class A to Class C felonies, all involving child molesting and sexual misconduct with a minor. The victims ranged in age from teenagers down to extremely young children.

Kristler was subsequently convicted in 2015 of two counts of child molesting. The other counts were dismissed.

In the latest case, Kristler was in the Michigan City prison when he admitted once again to abusing additional children.

Detective Brad Stille of the Indiana State Police was assigned to investigate in March of 2018.

In the latest probable cause affidavit, prepared by Det. Stille, he details Kristler’s account of the incident and interviews conducted with the victim and a parent of the victim.

Stille determined that at the time of the alleged incident in 2010, Kristler was over the age of 21 and the victim was under the age of 14.

Greene County Prosecutor Jarrod Holtsclaw then filed a case against Kristler in December of 2018 and Kristler was charged with child molesting involving intercourse or deviate sex with a victim less than 14 years old, a Class A felony.

Kristler has not been transported back to Greene County to face these charges in person. From the initial hearing to the sentencing, every hearing has been conducted with Kristler appearing in court via video conferencing link with the prison.

In March, Kristler entered into a negotiated plea agreement with Prosecutor Holtsclaw and Greene County Deputy Public Defender Ellen Martin who was appointed by the court to represent Kristler.

The Court accepted the agreement and was then bound by its terms.

Kristler did not receive any credit for time served and he will not start serving his 25-year sentence until after he has completed serving his time in his other previous cases.

According to DOC records, Kristler was convicted in July of 2008 of sexual misconduct with a minor, a Class C felony. He was sentenced to four years in prison and was released in May of 2010.

After his release, while he was on probation, new allegations surfaced and in November of 2013, he was sent back to prison to serve out the part of his sentence that had been suspended.

Shortly after he was sent back, another case was filed against him and in May of 2014, he was convicted of child molesting, a Class A felony. He was sentenced to 25 years. The projected date that he will finish serving this sentence is in May of 2036.

After his first confession behind bars, he was convicted in January of 2015 of two counts of child molesting, one as a Class A felony, the other as a Class B felony. In this case, he was sentenced to 48 years on the Class A and 10 years on the Class B. The projected date that he will finish serving these sentences is in May of 2065.

In the latest case, convicted of another count of child molesting as a Class A felony, he was sentenced to 25 years and the projected date that he will finish serving this sentence is November of 2077.

According to DOC records, Kristler’s earliest possible release date is November 22, 2077.
