Man who escaped from Community Corrections now behind bars
/A 47-year-old man who escaped April 5 from the Greene County Community Correction Facility was arrested April 14 and is currently in the Greene County Jail.
The Greene County Sheriff's Office requested assistance in locating Charles Orr, who at the time was considered to be armed and dangerous, after he escaped from the Greene County Community Correction facility April 5.
According to a probable cause affidavit written by Greene County Community Corrections Facility Field Officer, he was contacted at approximately 5:49 p.m. on April 5 after a case manager had received a tamper notification from Orr’s monitoring device. The monitoring device is attached around work release participants' ankles with a strap and is monitored through GPS and cellular tracking. Orr had an approved work schedule of 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and that day had been approved a special pass to shop for clothing in Bloomfield. The special pass required him to return to the corrections facility by 6 p.m.
The case manager informed Sparks she had searched Orr’s location, which showed he was last in the area west of Switz City. According to the probable cause affidavit, this is where the tampering occurred and the device stopped moving. Sparks traveled to Switz City and met with Greene County Sheriff’s Department Deputies Michael Stanley and Caleb Sipes. They located the device on the north side of State Road 54. The strap of the device had been cut.
Stanley and Sipes, according to the probable cause affidavit, conducted extensive search attempts to include cell phone locations “pings” and notifications to surrounding counties that Orr could have associations with; however, officers were unable to locate him on April 5.
Orr was convicted of manufacturing methamphetamine in July 2020, according to the probable cause affidavit. He was sentenced to seven years in the Indiana Department of Corrections with three years suspended. In July 2022, his sentence was modified to work release.
When he was arrested on April 14, he was held without bond. Greene County Sheriff’s Department Special Deputy Ted Holley was the arresting officer.
