Man jailed on warrant issued back in 2017

Back in July of 2017, a warrant was issued for a man accused of stealing money from a family member in 2016. Just this week he was booked into the Greene County Jail to face a charge of felony theft.

Donald Earl Walters, Jr., 57, was transferred in from the Scott County Jail on Monday, June 3. According to jail records, he is from Scottsburg. Court records indicate he had a home address in Farmersburg when the criminal case was filed against him. A probable cause affidavit indicates he may have been living in the Worthington area at the time the theft occurred.

In early November, 2016, Det. Shawn Cullison of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department started an investigation into a report of fraud.

Det. Cullison met with a man who lived in the Worthington area in 2016 and said he’d received a notification from his bank, First Financial Bank, of an overdraft charge for a $950 check that he didn’t write. He said when he checked with the bank, he discovered a total of four checks had been cashed with a forged signature.

The detective was provided copies of the four checks. One was made out to Walters for $325. Three others were made out to a girlfriend of Walters, for $725, $950 and $750.

Det. Cullison said the man explained that Walters was a family member who had lived with him for a while, but he didn’t notice he had checks missing until he got the notification from the bank.

Cullison reported the checks were cashed at a bank outside of Greene County but he was able to obtain photographs and videos of Walters cashing three of the checks.

Following the investigation, a criminal case was filed against Walters and a warrant was issued for his arrest in July, 2017. That warrant has remained outstanding until this week.

Bond was set at $4,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed in the Greene County case. However, he’s being held without bond on a warrant issued in a case involving felony forgery and misdemeanor theft in Vigo County. He’s also being held without bond for failure to appear in a case in Morgan County.

In Greene County, Walters is scheduled to appear for an initial hearing on June 11 in Greene Superior Court when he will be formally charged with theft, where the value of the property is between $750 and $50,000, a Level 6 felony.
