Man arrested on drug charges after sleeping in roadway
/A 29-year-old Lewis man was arrested July 14 on charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia after he was found unconscious behind the wheel of a VW Beetle parked partially in the roadway of County Road 200 West, just north of State Road 157 North in Worthington.
Greene County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Jordan Allor arrested Jason Ray Allen in the early morning hours of July 14. Allen is being charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia.
At approximately 9:40 p.m. on July 13, the Greene County Sheriff’s Department received a call in regard to the vehicle parked partially in the roadway. The caller told Dispatch they did not believe anyone was in the car, but believed the vehicle would be a road hazard as the sun went down.
When Deputy Robert Just arrived on scene, he requested additional assistance as the driver, later identified as Allen, appeared to be unconscious. According to the probable cause, while Allor was en route, Just informed him Allen was conscious and awake.
Upon arrival at the scene, Allor wrote he observed Allen wearing a pair of athletic shorts inside out and nothing else. According to the probable cause, Allen’s pupils were dilated, he appeared to be agitated, he was overly talkative, and could not focus on one story at a time. While Deputy Just was talking with Allen, Sgt. Allor observed a green cut straw in the center of the dash. Allor wrote through his experience, he knows cut straws are commonly used to ingest controlled substances into the body through the nose.
Allen was asked by officers to exit the vehicle and asked about the straw. When Sgt. Allor told Allen straws cut like the one in his vehicle were commonly used to ingest controlled substances, he began walking toward the vehicle. Sgt. Allor had to tell Allen to come back to where they were speaking.
When asked if there was anything in the vehicle Allor should be aware of, specifically methamphetamine, Allen alleged some beer cans. Allen alleged the situation was a shock to him because he had just been sleeping. According to the probable cause affidavit, Sgt. Allor reminded him he was sleeping in a car in the roadway.
Upon walking to the vehicle, Sgt. Allor looked through the driver’s window where, according to the probable cause, a small glass jar with a black containing a white crystal substance was visible. The substance later field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Upon search of the vehicle, an orange cut straw was located in a wallet. The straw also later field-tested positive for methamphetamine. In the passenger seat, a clear plastic har containing repent plant-like material was also located.
Allen was transported to Greene County Jail where he was initially held without bond.
When he appeared in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing on July 24, a bond of $10,000 surety with 10% cash was allowed.
