Katherine Anne Shonk, 46, Linton, appeared in Greene Superior Court early this morning, Tuesday, December 15, for an initial hearing on charges filed after officers responded to a domestic dispute that started late Friday, December 4.

Shonk was arrested by Officer Janzen Franklin of the Linton Police Department and was booked into the Greene County Jail at 1:53 a.m. on Saturday, December 5.

LPD Officer John Agan, the investigating officer, said he and Officer Franklin were on patrol around 9 p.m. that Friday when they were dispatched to a domestic at a residence on 5th Street NW in Linton.

When the officers arrived, they found Shonk, who did not reside at the residence, standing outside along with a man who did reside at the residence. Shonk’s vehicle was parked in front of the residence with the engine running. She reportedly appeared to be agitated and was waving her hands and arms, aggressively gesturing towards the male resident.

After separating the two, the officers talked to Shonk, the male resident, two other adults and one juvenile who were all present at the resident when an altercation took place between Shonk and the man.

The officers learned Shonk and the man were married but he said they are separated and he was planning to file for a divorce. He said he had been residing at the residence for four days.

The man and the others who were present all told a similar story about what happened. Shonk’s story was different but Officer Agan said her statements were inconsistent.

After her rights were read, Shonk changed parts of her story and allegedly admitted she stopped at the residence to confront the man about his relationship with another woman and that when he opened the door, she entered the residence without being invited. She said she was asked to leave but she refused.

Shonk allegedly admitted to hitting the man in the face with her hands or fists and that she tried to remove his shirt because it was a gift from a member of her family. She also said she wished she hadn’t stopped at the residence.

Photographs were taken of redness, scrapes and scratches on the man’s neck.

When Shonk was taken into custody, the officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her and when asked, Shonk allegedly admitted to consuming alcohol from morning until an hour before driving to the residence.

Shonk was unable to complete standard field sobriety tests due to an injury to her foot, which was wrapped in a bandage. She said the injury was the result of an accidental gunshot wound that occurred about a week earlier.

Shonk was transported to Greene County General Hospital where a blood draw was taken – results pending.

Officer Agan reported Shonk’s criminal history includes a conviction for operating a vehicle while intoxicated on July 30 in Daviess County.

Shonk’s bond was set at $17,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. She has not posted bond.

During Shonk’s initial hearing this morning, she was served with a protective order, ordering her to have no contact with the alleged victim, and she was charged with:

  • Residential entry – breaking and entering a dwelling, a Level 6 felony,

  • Domestic battery, with a prior conviction, a Level 6 felony,

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction within seven years, a Level 6 felony,

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person with a prior conviction within seven years, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Criminal trespassing, a Class A misdemeanor.

Shonk is scheduled to appear in court again tomorrow, in a different case. She was arrested last spring and in late October, she entered into a negotiated plea agreement. A jury trial was then canceled and a change of plea hearing is set for tomorrow morning, Wednesday, December 16.
