Linton woman accused of carelessly waving a loaded Glock around
/A Linton woman will be charged with felony criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon for allegedly waving a loaded Glock .380 around during an argument in a house where children were sleeping.
Jenifer Marie Reed, 32, Linton, was booked into the Greene County Jail last Friday after a warrant was issued for her arrest following an investigation by Detective David Elmore of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.
Det. Elmore was dispatched to a rural Linton residence on Friday, September 24, after Greene County Dispatch got a call from Reed’s grandparent who said Reed and her husband were arguing, that Reed possibly had been drinking, and that Reed had a gun. While he was on the phone, dispatch could hear yelling and screaming. Other deputies and officers from the Linton Police Department also responded to assist on the scene.
Shortly after arriving, the man involved in the argument with her met officers outside and Det. Elmore found Reed inside. She was detained and placed in handcuffs while other deputies did a safety sweep of the house. Reed said her juvenile children were also inside the house, asleep.
During questioning, Reed explained they’d been arguing and she allegedly admitted she’d gone to the gun safe and pulled out a gun which Det. Elmore reported to be a black .380 caliber Glock handgun loaded with five rounds in the magazine but no bullets chambered. She said she got the gun then went to her car and put it in the console, which led the man to call her grandparents. She allegedly said the point of puling the gun out was to prove to the man that she would kill herself. She said she didn’t know if it was loaded or not.
When Det. Elmore interviewed the man, he said Reed had been drinking all day, had passed out, and didn’t tell the truth about going to work. He said he told her he was done and didn’t care what she did, so she went to the gun safe and got the gun saying she was going to kill herself. He alleged she was waving the gun around in all directions while standing inside the house near the front door facing the back bedrooms and he was afraid she was going to accidentally shoot the gun inside the house. He said he told Reed the handgun was loaded and to stop waving it around. He confirmed the children were sleeping in their bedrooms while she was waving the gun around.
Reed was not arrested on the scene but after Det. Elmore submitted the information to the prosecutor’s office, a criminal case was filed against Reed last week and a warrant issued for her arrest. She turned herself in to the sheriff’s department at 9:23 p.m. last Friday with bond set at $5,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. She posted $500 and was released from custody.
Reed is facing a charge of criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon, a Level 6 felony. Her initial hearing is scheduled for November 4 in Greene Superior Court.
