Linton man arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated following citizen tip

A Linton man was arrested June 12, after a concerned motorist reported his erratic driving behavior on State Road 54.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Greene County Superior Court, Sgt. Jordan Allor of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call around 5:02 p.m. from a driver who had been following a silver passenger car traveling westbound on East State Road 54. The caller stated the vehicle had crossed the center line multiple times and nearly left the roadway near J.L. Wilson Road.

Sgt. Allor, who was stationary at the intersection of State Road 54 and County Road 70 East, observed a gray 2002 Hyundai Elantra matching the caller’s description. The vehicle, driven by Eric L. Wolfe, 54, was also spotted traveling without the driver wearing a seatbelt. Allor attempted a traffic stop near West Main and Cleveland Streets in Bloomfield. Wolfe continued driving several blocks before stopping on Park Lane.

During the stop, Allor noted Wolfe exhibited signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, red, glassy eyes, and the smell of alcohol. A bottle of Early Times whiskey was also visible on the passenger-side floorboard, according to the probable cause affidavit.

When questioned, Wolfe was reportedly unable to estimate how much he had been drinking and at one point told the deputy, “You can take me to jail, bro,” later acknowledging, “Yeah, probably,” when asked if he was too intoxicated to drive.

Wolfe also had trouble standing without stumbling and struggled to produce his driver’s license, ultimately handing over random items from his pockets. Dispatch later confirmed Wolfe’s license was suspended.

Attempts to administer a field sobriety test were unsuccessful due to Wolfe’s lack of cooperation. He was placed in handcuffs, read his Miranda rights, and transported to Greene County General Hospital. While Wolfe initially agreed to a chemical test, he later refused to give a definitive answer. According to the probable cause, a search warrant was obtained for a blood draw, which was completed at 6:45 p.m., and results are pending with the Indiana State Department of Toxicology.

The original caller later confirmed to police that Wolfe’s driving had nearly resulted in a head-on collision, and she observed him driving onto the shoulder of the road before returning to his lane.

Wolfe faces charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A Misdemeanor and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C Misdemeanor. He appeared in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing on June 16.
