Jailhouse fight started over control of the TV
/A jailhouse fight over control of the TV in C-Pod led to a battery charge against a Bloomfield man currently incarcerated in the Greene County Jail.
Ricky Lee Cain, 40, Bloomfield, an inmate at the Greene County Jail, was one of two inmates allegedly involved in a fight around 7:12 p.m. on Friday, August 14.
Deputy Devan Goad of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department has been investigating with assistance from GCSD Deputy Michael Stanley, Det. David Elmore and GCSD Jail Officer Justin Bovenschen and Cpl. Zachary Mead.
Deputy Goad reviewed written reports on the incident from the two jail officers then viewed video from a surveillance camera that captured the incident. He then interviewed Cain while Deputy Stanley interviewed the second inmate.
Jail officers reported they saw Cain messing around with the television in C-Pod and that Cain and the other inmate got into a verbal argument over control of the television which escalated into a physical assault by Cain on the other inmate.
Deputy Goad reported the video shows the two inmates in a verbal argument before the second inmate backed away while Cain followed him in an aggressive manner. Deputy Goad said the video shows Cain slapped the other inmate with his right hand to the left side of the other inmate’s face. Both then went to the floor and continued fighting. Both then stood up and a guard entered the pod and separated the two men.
When the second inmate, the alleged victim, was interviewed, he said Cain is constantly antagonizing him, wanting to fight him over control of the TV. He said before the fight, he was trying to get away from Cain and to notify jail staff but Cain threw the first punch. The inmate had bruising on his head, right ribs, upper left arm and right knee.
During Cain’s interview with Deputy Goad, Cain confirmed the two men had been in an argument over the television and said the other inmate called him a name and after that, he slapped him. He allegedly said when the fight went to the ground, he held the other inmate in a head lock. Cain said he (Cain) was not injured.
A criminal case was filed against Cain yesterday. He is facing a preliminary charge of battery resulting in bodily injury, a Class A misdemeanor.
