Elsewhere: ISP investigating attempted murder, suspect is estranged wife of Morgan County Sheriff
/MARTINSVILLE, Ind. - The estranged wife of the Morgan County Sheriff is facing a charge of attempted murder for allegedly breaking into a home with a firearm in the early morning hours on Monday.

The Indiana State Police released information about the incident later in the day, reporting that early Monday morning, Morgan County Law Enforcement requested assistance from ISP detectives from the Bloomington Post to investigate an attempted murder case.
The incident occurred just after 1 a.m. Monday on Sichting Road east of Martinsville.
According to the ISP press release, detectives learned that Jacquelyn Downey, 51, of Indianapolis, allegedly made entry into the residence on Sichting Road through a window, while in possession of a firearm. When the homeowner confronted Downey, a struggle ensued, resulting in the homeowner overtaking Downey and holding her until law enforcement arrived.
Downey was taken into custody and being held on preliminary charges of:
- Attempted Murder – Level 2 felony,
- Intimidation – Level 5 felony (2 counts),
- Criminal Recklessness – Level 6 felony,
- Domestic battery – Level 6 felony, and
- Harassment – Class B misdemeanor.
Multiple news organizations in Indianapolis say they have confirmation that Downey is the estranged wife of Morgan County Sheriff Robert J. Downey.
Under the Law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
