Inmate has additional charges added after allegedly battering, intimidating jail officer
/A 43-year-old Terre Haute man, an inmate at the Greene County Jail, is facing additional charges following a Dec. 18 incident at the jail.
James Hartmann has been charged with battery against a public safety official, a Level 6 Felony, and intimidation, a Level 6 Felony. According to a probable cause affidavit written by Greene County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Devan Goad, he was requested to investigate an incident in which a jail officer was allegedly assaulted by Hartmann.
Deputy Goad reviewed video footage of Hartmann throwing milk and other items outside his cell. According to a probable cause affidavit, when Jail Officer Aaron Hudson attempted to shut the cuff port, Hartmann grabbed Hudson’s left arm and attempted to pull him through the cuff port. Deputy Goad wrote that when Officer Hudson got free, Hartmann began yelling about how he’d told them before not to put his name on his food. Hartmann allegedly began yelling obscenities, threatening to kill Officer Hudson when he was on the streets. Deputy Goad observed red marks on Officer Hudson’s left arm from this incident.
Deputy Goad received a jail case report, written by Officer Hudson. Per the report, Officer Hudson explained that he had received verbal threats from Hartmann at around 3:49 a.m. on Dec. 18. According to the report, Hartmann threatened Officer Hudson by saying “I'm going to gouge your eyes out, break your wrist when my cuff port opens, and rip off your testicles with my foot”. At approximately 5:50 a.m., Hartmann allegedly threw his milk and tray out of the cell. As Officer Hudson closed the cuff port, per the report, Hartmann grabbed his left arm and attempted to pull him into the cell. Officer Hudson grabbed Hartmann’s wrist and ordered him to let go. After ordering him to let go three times, Hartmann obeyed the command.
