Indy man wanted for over two years was arrested in Greene County Saturday

An Indianapolis man who has had a warrant out for his arrest in another county since 2019 was taken into custody in Greene County over the weekend. The warrant was issued in a case involving possession of cocaine. During his arrest, he was allegedly in possession of smoking devices used to ingest crack cocaine.

Jerry Allen Cabell

Jerry Allen Cabell, 71, Indianapolis, was arrested on Saturday afternoon, December 4, by Indiana State Police Trooper Caleb Garvin during a stop on I-69.

Trooper Garvin was southbound on I-69 at 1:42 p.m. Saturday when he passed a white Nissan, also southbound, and noticed it had a temporary license plate that was expired. He slowed down so the Nissan would pass him back but the Nissan slowed down too. They got down to 41 mph in a 70 mph zone before the Nissan finally passed the trooper, who then hit the flashing lights and initiated a traffic stop.

Cabell was a passenger in the Nissan and when records were checked, it was determined he had a warrant out for his arrest that was issued in Vanderburgh County in 2019. The warrant has been outstanding since then, until this traffic stop in Greene County.

Cabell was taken into custody on the warrant and then when ISP Trooper Richard Klun and his K-9 Loki arrived to assist, Loki alerted to the presence of an illegal substance in the vehicle.

Trooper Garvin reported that during a search of the vehicle, items were found that are commonly used to ingest crack cocaine and they had residue. One of the items was found in a cup holder in the passenger compartment. The other was found in a suitcase in the trunk and Trooper Garvin noted that when Trooper Klun was searching the suitcase, Cabell made a comment about Trooper Klun putting Cabell’s new clothes on the ground.

The warrant out of Vanderburgh County was issued in a case involving possession of cocaine, a Level 6 felony.

Cabell was booked into the Greene County Jail at 3:35 p.m. and was being held without bond pending court appearance.

In addition to the warrant, when Cabell appears in Greene Superior Court for his initial hearing, he’s facing charges of:

  • Possession of a narcotic drug, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.
