Hymera man charged with battery on a Lyons man
/When a Hymera man arrested last Friday night appeared in court yesterday, he was charged with battery resulting in bodily injury for allegedly going to a home in the Lyons area and punching the resident during an altercation.
Monty D. Maze, 42, Hymera, was arrested by Deputy Alan Jackson of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department late Friday, May 24.
Maze’s bond was set at $4,000 surety with ten percent allowed. He posted $400 cash and was released from jail on Saturday, May 25.
When Maze appeared in Greene Superior Court yesterday, May 30, he was charged with battery resulting in bodily injury, a Class A misdemeanor.
On the day of his arrest, after the sheriff’s department received information that an incident had taken place at a residence on West County Road 600 South in the Lyons area, Deputy Jackson, the investigating officer, responded and talked to a resident who said he had been battered by Maze.
Maze and another man had allegedly gone to the residence uninvited, in a red passenger car, and tried to sell the resident a gun. The resident said he told them to leave “over and over.” Maze allegedly said he knew the resident from a fight they had been involved in at some earlier time. When the man with Maze uncovered the gun, another man, who was in the house and witnessed this incident, took the gun and put it to the side so it could not be used.
Deputy Jackson reported the resident said Maze punched him so he pushed him back, but Maze then punched him a couple more times and spilled beer down his back.
While at the house, Deputy Jackson talked to the resident, the other man who was present, a woman who also witnessed the altercation, and to a youth who told the deputy he saw Maze hit his father.
Deputy Jackson documented the man’s injuries to his face with photographs, and Sgt. Bobby Pierce, who had arrived to assist, took possession of the gun, which was a muzzleloader.
The two officers then located the red car in Linton and found Maze sitting outside nearby. Maze was detained and transported to the sheriff’s department for an interview.
According to Deputy Jackson, Maze said he had been in a previous confrontation with the resident a long time ago and admitted he had gotten beat up. He said he went out to the man’s house with the muzzleloader to make it right but while he was there, the resident pulled out a handgun and a confrontation followed. Maze allegedly said the other man who was at the house picked up a “blade” and some other person with a handgun told Maze and his friend to leave. Maze said he did not lay hands on the resident.
Maze was booked into the Greene County Jail around 11 p.m. that night.
A couple of days later, Deputy Jackson located the person who went to the residence with Maze but the person said he forgot what happened, that he did not go inside and did not see any altercation.
