Homeless man needing to get warm arrested for trespassing during storm

Few new arrests were made during last week’s ice and snowstorm that was followed by bitter cold temperatures – but there was one on Thursday night, for trespassing. The mug shot of the accused trespasser was the only new entry on last Friday’s jail log.

Jason Phillip Workman

Jason Phillip Workman, 45, Solsberry, was arrested by Deputy Logan Milligan of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department last Thursday night, February 3.

Deputy Milligan responded to a residence on East Christian Church Road, Solsberry, after a resident called Greene County Dispatch at 6:09 p.m. and said a homeless man had knocked on his door and asked to get warmed up. The man also asked the resident to call police for help.

The resident allowed the man into his warm home then greeted Deputy Milligan when she arrived and invited her inside.

When Deputy Milligan talked to the man, he said he had nowhere to go and did not want to leave. She identified him as Jason Workman when he provided his identification. Deputy Milligan asked if she could transport him somewhere to be out of the cold weather and he responded by saying, “I’m not leaving unless you take me to jail.”

Deputy Milligan asked again if Workman could think of a place to go, but Workman said no. So she told him to put his hands behind his back and he complied. Once outside, a pat-down yielded no weapons, and he got into the patrol vehicle for the ride to the sheriff’s department.

Workman was booked in at 7:54 p.m. with bond set at $1,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed.

This morning, Tuesday, February 8, Workman appeared in Greene Superior Court for his initial hearing via two-way video connection between the jail and the courtroom. A public defender was appointed to represent him.

Workman has been charged with criminal trespassing, a Class A misdemeanor.

As of this evening (Tuesday, February 8), Workman has not posted bond and is still in custody at the Greene County Jail.
