Fight started with burrito to the face, escalated to vodka bottle to the head
/Two passengers in a car traveling on I-69 got into a physical altercation when one man threw a burrito in the other man's face. When they stopped at a gas station in Greene County, he hit him over the head with a vodka bottle. GCSD arrested them both.
Jonathan Ryan Vaughan, 41, Evansville, and Tucker Ryan Madden, 26, Newburgh, were both arrested by Deputy Harvey Holt of the Greene County Sheriff's Department on Monday, June 6.
Just before 2:00 PM that afternoon, Deputy Holt was dispatched to the gas station located at 1172 State Road 58 in the Bloomfield area on the report of a fight in progress that involved one man hitting another man over the head with a vodka bottle.
Deputy Holt spoke with both Vaughan and Madden, the two men who were involved in the fight. The two men had been passengers in a vehicle driven by another man and Detective Sean Cullison spoke with the driver of the vehicle.
The driver allegedly said the two men were physically fighting in the vehicle while he was driving on I-69. He said both men had made threats to beat each other up when they stopped for gas and that while they were fighting in the vehicle, Madden hit Vaughn in the face with a burrito. He also said he heard one say they were going to stab the other one when they got to the gas station but the driver wasn't sure who actually said that.
Deputy Holt reported that video from the surveillance system at the gas station showed a white car pull in and when it stopped, both passenger doors opened. Madden exited the front seat with a cane and a vodka bottle. When Vaughan exited the vehicle, Madden hit him with the vodka bottle. Vaughan fell backwards as the vehicle pulled away and Madden continued to hit Vaughan with the vodka bottle at least two more times. The video did not show that Vaughan had gone after Madden.
Vaughn allegedly said they had been arguing and it turned physical as they were going down I-69 then when they got to the gas station Madden hit him with the vodka bottle. Deputy Holt reported that Vaughan had a cut and a lump on the back of his head behind his right ear and he had been bleeding but the bleeding had stopped by the time the deputy arrived. Vaughan also said he'd been hit with a burrito.
Madden allegedly admitted he hit Vaughan in the head with a vodka bottle at the gas station. He said he was defending himself because Vaughan threatened to beat him up several times. He also claimed he was punched by Vaughan. And he did admit he threw a burrito at Vaughan.
Both men were taken into custody and booked into the Greene County Jail before 4:00 PM. Vaughan’s bond was set at $500 surety with 10% cash allowed. Madden's bond was set at $1500 surety with 10% cash allowed. They have both since bonded out of jail.
Both are scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court next week for their initial hearings.
