Fight between brothers ends with one injured, one arrested
/When an ISP trooper responded to a fight between brothers in the Solsberry area last week, an ambulance was called to take one to the hospital and the other was taken to jail.
Vernon Scott Cordell, 20, Solsberry, was arrested by Indiana State Police Trooper Ben Burris late last Thursday night, July 22. Cordell was booked into the Greene County Jail at 11:13 p.m. with bond set at $1,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He has since posted bond and been released.
Around 8:45 p.m. last Thursday, Greene County Dispatch asked Trooper Burris to respond to a physical fight at a residence on Overhill Lane, Solsberry. GCSD deputies had already been to the residence earlier in the evening, for the same reason, but no arrests were made at that time.
When Trooper Burris arrived around 9 p.m., he talked to a 19-year-old man outside the residence who said he was in a lot of pain all over, especially his neck area. Trooper Burris said his face and neck were scratched up and he was having trouble keeping his head up while talking. The man’s parents were there and said he had been in a fight with his brother, Vernon Cordell.
Trooper Burris reported that when he talked to Vernon Cordell, his bottom lip was bleeding and swollen and he had trouble standing up, grabbing things on the deck to maintain his balance. He confirmed he’d been in a fight with his brother. Cordell said an argument started after his brother accused him of taking something. After deputies arrived and then left earlier, the fight started again in the driveway and yard.
Vernon Cordell allegedly said the fight continued until his brother’s neck was hurting and he thought his brother might have a concussion. He allegedly said he punched his brother in the face and both of them ended up hitting mailboxes at the end of the driveway.
Trooper Burris talked with several witnesses who confirmed Vernon Cordell’s story about what happened. When he talked to the parents, one said he tried to break up the fight but he is tired of the situation and let them continue.
An ambulance responded to the scene and after checking both brothers, Vernon Cordell was transported to jail but his brother was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for medical treatment.
Cordell is scheduled to be in court for his initial hearing tomorrow afternoon, July 27, when he will be formally charged with disorderly conduct – engaged in fighting or tumultuous conduct, a Class B misdemeanor.
