Elsewhere: Bloomington Police investigating fatal shooting early today

Bloomington, Ind. - On March 25, 2021, at approximately 12:16 a.m., officers responded to the 1400 block of N. Woodburn Avenue in Bloomington for multiple reports of shots fired in the area. As officers were en route, Central Emergency Dispatch received another call regarding a vehicle crash in front of the La Bonita Restaurant & Market just north of this location.

Upon the arrival of officers, it was determined that a gray Honda passenger car had crashed into another parked vehicle and the driver of the Honda had been shot. Officers immediately began rendering aid to the victim until the arrival of ambulance personnel. The victim was then transported to the IU Health Bloomington Hospital where she was later pronounced deceased. The shooting victim has been identified by Monroe County Coroner Joani Shields as Keisha Huntington (18, Bloomington).

Investigators located three empty 9 mm shell casings in the parking lot of Northcrest Apartments in the 1400 block of N Woodburn Avenue, which is where the shooting is believed to have occurred. Several individuals were interviewed and provided information to detectives. It is believed that the victim was attempting to flee from the area after the suspect tried to rob both she and a passenger in the car and she was shot while driving away from the suspect.

Investigators were able to identify a suspect, which was determined to be a 16 year-old male. At approximately 11:15 a.m., investigators were able to locate the suspect in an apartment in the 900 block of N Rogers Street. A negotiator with the Bloomington Police Department made contact with the male via telephone, and he eventually exited the apartment and was taken into custody without incident.

The 16 year-old suspect will be transported to the Southwest Indiana Regional Youth Village in Vincennes, Indiana to be housed there while awaiting formal charging by the Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office.

At this time, the name of the suspect is not being released due to his status as a juvenile offender and no further information is available to be released, as this is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Detective Joe Henry at (812)349-3907.
