Couple stopped in stolen vehicle

A man and woman stopped for speeding in Linton wound up in jail facing various charges involving drugs, not telling the truth, and auto theft.

Laura Suan Cox, 36, of Sullivan, and Samuel Duane Drake, 35, of Farmersburg, were booked into the Greene County Jail very early Sunday, November 10, by Officer Nick Yingling of the Linton Police Department following an investigation by LPD Officer John Agan.

Officer Agan was on patrol late Saturday, November 9, when he noticed a blue Chrysler 300 in the area of A Street NW and 10th Street NW. It was around 11:45 p.m. It appeared to be traveling fast and he clocked it going 47 mph in a 35 mph zone. He initiated a traffic stop.

Cox was the driver. Drake was a passenger.

Cox gave the officer a driver’s license that belonged to someone else, allegedly told the officer the wrong name, but later admitted her real name. Drake allegedly also called Cox by the other name in an attempt to deceive the officer. Cox later said she thought there was a warrant out for her arrest in Sullivan County.

Officer Agan reported that when he ran a check on the license plate, it was from a Camaro and he discovered the Chrysler 300 had been reported as stolen out of Greenwood, Ind.

Other issues popped up during the stop, including drugs and paraphernalia that were found in Drake’s pocket, under the seats and in a handbag.

Both Cox and Drake claimed they had just purchased the Chrysler for cash but didn’t get a bill of sale and didn’t know the name of the person who sold it to them. They both denied they had stolen the vehicle.

Both were being held without bond pending their appearances in court.

When Cox appeared for her initial hearing last Thursday, she was charged with:

  • Auto theft – theft of the entire automobile, a Level 6 felony,

  • Identity deception, a Level 6 felony,

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony,

  • Possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor, and

  • Possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

When Drake appeared for his initial hearing, also last Thursday, he was charged with:

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony,

  • False informing, a Class B misdemeanor, and

  • Possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

During the hearings, her bond was set at $13,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. His was $10,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. They have both since posted the ten percent and been released.
