Coalmont man arrested on theft charge

A 21-year-old Coalmont man, previously convicted of theft, was arrested on a warrant Dec. 12 after allegedly taking items from the Jasonville Family Dollar Store without rending payment.

Holden Nicholson was arrested by Greene County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Harvey Holt for theft with a prior conviction for theft or conversion. A warrant was issued for his arrest on Dec. 8 following a Dec. 5 incident in Jasonville.

According to a probable cause affidavit written by Jasonville Police Chief Ryan Van Horn, a theft investigation was requested on Dec. 6 by a Jasonville Family Dollar Store manager. When Van Horn arrived at the store, he was provided surveillance footage from Dec. 5 which showed footage of a male – later identified as Nicholson – taking a portable tire pump, walking to an adjacent aisle, and placing the pump in his coat. Nicholson walked out of the view of the camera for a few seconds, but when he re-entered the camera view, the pump was no longer in his hand. He then left the store without rendering payment.

On Dec. 6, Chief Van Horn contacted Nicholson at his residence in Coalmont and advised him he’d observed the footage from the Family Dollar Store. According to the probable cause affidavit, Nicholson alleged he attempted to conceal the tire pump but pulled it back out when he looked up and saw the camera. Van Horn alleged he believed Nicholson still had the tire pump and wanted to know why he took it. Nicholson alleged he needed a tire pump but didn’t want to say he stole it.

Van Horn, according to the probable cause affidavit, wanted Nicholson to return the tire pump to the store; however, Nicholson inquired about having some additional time as he said he may have left the pump box in a friend’s vehicle. After Van Horn advised he wanted the pump returned that day, Nicholson retrieved the pump from behind the driver seat of an old truck. He apologized for taking the pump. Nicholson later alleged he did not have enough money to purchase the item.

Nicholson was previously convicted of theft in December 2019 in Clay County.

He was held in Greene County Jail where his bond was set at $4,000 surety with 10% cash allowed.
