Bloomfield woman accused of impaired driving in borrowed car
/A Bloomfield woman has been charged with a long list of criminal counts after allegedly not returning a borrowed car then driving in an impaired state and not cooperating with officers.
Shiane Georgina Barnhart, 25, Bloomfield, and Jordan Lee Burch, 32, Loogootee, were both arrested by Deputy Marshal Brittany Ingram of the Bloomfield Police Department last Wednesday, November 18.
Both Barnhart and Burch were booked into the Greene County Jail around 3:30 a.m. that morning. Later that day and the next day, one criminal case was filed against Jordan Burch and two criminal cases were filed against Shiane Barnhart. Jordan Burch’s case and one of Shiane Barnhart’s cases relate to an incident that occurred on the day of their arrest, November 18. Barnhart’s other case dates back to a report that was filed back on November 6.
Officer Ingram was dispatched to a location in Bloomfield around 7 p.m. on Friday, November 6, on the report of a stolen vehicle. Officer Ingram talked to a Bloomfield woman who said she let Shiane Barnhart borrow her silver 2000 Chevrolet Malibu the day before and Barnhart was supposed to return it that same evening. But she did not return it.
The vehicle owner said she received a text from Barnhart the morning of November 6 saying she was on her way and the owner told her to bring the car back now because she needed it. After that, the vehicle owner didn’t hear back from Barnhart that day.
The vehicle was entered into the IDACS system as stolen and Officer Ingram heard from a deputy in Martin County saying the plates had been run the night before at a gas station. The deputy said the vehicle tried to evade and was later seen at a locally known drug house.
By November 7, the vehicle owner received other text messages from Barnhart saying she was in the hospital with COVID-19, the vehicle was having mechanical trouble and she would have someone tow the vehicle, then she texted that the vehicle had an issue with the thermostat and was being towed to the vehicle owner’s home. It wasn’t.
Officer Ingram and Bloomfield Police Lt. Marvin Holt made attempts to locate the vehicle but were unsuccessful, until last Wednesday.
Last Wednesday, November 18, around 1 a.m., Officer Ingram was sitting stationary in her patrol vehicle when she saw a silver Malibu eastbound on State Road 54 in Bloomfield, with a taillight burned out. When she got behind the vehicle, it sped up then turned into Huck’s gas station where the officer activated the red and blue lights to initiate a traffic stop.
Shiane Barnhart was the driver. Jordan Burch was the passenger.
Sgt. Bobby Pierce of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department arrived to assist and so did Officer Joe Riley of the Linton Police Department along with his K-9 partner.
The behavior of Barnhart and Burch was suspicious and Barnhart began yelling, allegedly had a corner bag with a white powdery substance fall down her shirt, and an ambulance was called to clear Barnhart before she was placed into a patrol vehicle.
Officer Ingram reported that during this incident, both Barnhart and Burch showed signs of impairment with constricted pen-point pupils, uncontrolled and sporadic movements, involuntary gesturing and facial expressions, slurred speech, unintelligible sentences and Barnhart struggled to regulate the volume of her voice.
The K-9 had a positive alert on the vehicle but officers did not locate anything illegal in the vehicle.
Barnhart agreed to take a chemical test and was transported to Greene County General Hospital where a blood draw was taken – results pending. After the blood draw, she complained of neck pan and stomach pain and she requested steroids and muscle relaxers, then demanded to be taken to Bloomington Hospital. She was transported to the Greene County Jail.
Once at the jail, Barnhart was found to be in possession of a bag with a plant material and another bag with an unknown substance. These have been sent to the lab for analysis.
Burch was also transported to jail.
The keys to the silver Malibu were returned to the vehicle owner.
Burch is scheduled to appear in court on November 30 for an initial hearing. He is facing a charge of possession of a substance represented to be a controlled substance, a Class C misdemeanor.
Barnhart appeared in court for two initial hearings today, November 23.
In the first case against Barnhart connected to the silver Malibu, she has been charged with conversion, a Class A misdemeanor.
