Theodore "Ted" Nelson Powell
/Theodore "Ted" Nelson Powell, age 86, of Worthington, passed away on September 12, 2019 surrounded by family at his granddaughter’s residence. He was born August 15, 1933 in Freedom, Owen County Indiana. He was the fifth of eight children born to Jesse James and Mary Catherine (Scott) Powell.
He is survived by two sons, David Powell and Jim Powell, David’s wife Teresa Bender Powell, four grandchildren Kyla, Andrew, Michael and Steven, 6 great-grandchildren, Amira, Grady, Leland, Adrian, Leo, Amelia and Eyan, younger brother, Stanley Powell of Florida, and an older Sister, Beatrice Thomas of Michigan.
Ted was married to his wife Georgia (Jo) Manning on December 31, 1953. They were married for a little over 60 years until her passing in April 2014. They lost their middle child, Beatrice, a daughter to illness in May of 1957. He has now joined them in heaven.
Ted was a farmer and coal miner. He sold his Owen County farm and retired from Peabody Coal Company more than twenty years ago and moved to Worthington, Greene County, Indiana. He spent his retirement years helping and enjoying his children and grandchildren. During most of his retirement he partnered with his oldest son, David, raising beef cattle on David and Teresa’s Farm in Smith Township, Greene County, Indiana.
Ted served in the Army as an enlisted soldier during the Korean War. He spent two years overseas and was honorably discharged.
He was diagnosed with lung cancer in the spring of this year. Despite completing treatment for the cancer the disease took him quickly. He remained positive, never complained, was at peace and looked forward to seeing his wife and daughter again in the next life.
Ted was known for his hard work and story-telling. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and his dog Huggie.
A celebration of life service will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Worthington at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 15, 2019. Burial will follow at Patterson/Farmers Cemetery in Owen County.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 12 noon until the time of service.
