Mayme L. Taylor
/Mayme L. Taylor, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Linton at 7:21 PM on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at the age of 85, surrounded by the family she cherished.
Born on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1939, in Hymera, Indiana, Mayme was the daughter of Raymond "Leon" and Bessie M. (Shounk) Ward. She grew up in a bustling household, learning early the values of hard work, kindness, and laughter that she carried with her throughout her life.
A proud graduate of Hymera High School’s Class of 1957, Mayme married her high school sweetheart, Albert “Al” Taylor, in 1958. Together, they embarked on a remarkable journey as an Air Force family, living in many places across the country and even abroad. Mayme embraced the adventure, making each new house a home filled with warmth and love.
Mayme’s life was a tapestry of devotion—to her family, her faith, and her community. She wore many hats: from working in a shirt factory, to running a neighborhood ice cream shop where children would gather for a treat and a smile, to being a steadfast presence at home for her children and, later, her grandchildren. Her kitchen table was always open, her advice always honest, and her hugs always healing.
A woman of deep faith, Mayme was a dedicated member of the Linton First United Methodist Church, where she found joy in serving others and nurturing lifelong friendships. She was also an enthusiastic member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, lending her time and talents to causes close to her heart.
Mayme’s greatest pride was her family. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Gregory (Lori) Taylor of Hymera, Mark (Carrie) Taylor of Linton, and Becky Phillips of Linton. Her legacy lives on in her five grandchildren—Jamie Lynn Mathis, Amy (Bob) Richardson, A.J. (Tanja) Phillips, Sara (Mike) Ross, and Blake (Rochelle) Taylor—her ten great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Bill Ward, Charles "Chuck" Mason, and Keith (Karen) Mason, as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Mayme is reunited in peace with her parents; her beloved husband, Albert "Al" Taylor, who passed away in 2024; her son, Robert Taylor; her sisters, Betty Copeland and Eileen Samm; and her brothers, Roy Ward and Ray Ward.
An American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Service followed by a funeral service honoring Mayme’s life will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, with Pastor Ben Biggs officiating. Friends and family are invited to gather for visitation at the funeral home from 2:00 PM until the time of service. Private burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Linton First United Methodist Church Missions, through the funeral home.
Mayme’s gentle spirit, unwavering love, and infectious laughter will be deeply missed, but her legacy of kindness and faith will live on in all who knew her. Condolences and memories may be shared online at www.welchcornett.com.
