WPD recovers vehicle reported as stolen

A wife reported a vehicle as stolen this week. Turned out the husband had forgotten where he parked it. After he found it and was on his way to return the vehicle to his wife, he was stopped by a WPD officer.

Deputy Marshal Ryan Montgomery of the Worthington Police Department was on patrol around 8 p.m. last night, Wednesday, August 11, southbound on Commercial Street near downtown when he saw a blue Nissan Versa northbound. The vehicle matched the description of a vehicle that was reported as stolen the day before. Officer Montgomery also recognized the driver as Jacob Fawkes, the husband of the woman who reported the vehicle stolen.

Officer Montgomery turned around and located the vehicle parked at a business on the north end of town. Greene County Dispatch confirmed the vehicle was stolen - the plate number matched.

When Officer Montgomery talked to Fawkes, the man said he had forgotten where he left the vehicle after drinking with friends and he just found the vehicle earlier that day. He allegedly said a friend told him he’d left the vehicle in the parking lot at Walmart in Linton and he’d told his wife he believed the vehicle had been impounded after it was left parked in the lot for a few days. He also said he didn’t have a cell phone but he was just stopping at the store on the way to return the vehicle.

Officer Montgomery reported the vehicle was returned to the owner and Fawkes was given a courtesy ride to his home in the Worthington area.
