Veterans Hall of Honor opens Nov. 11

A Veterans Hall of Honor focused on preserving photos of veterans will open to the public at an open house on Veterans Day.

The Veterans Hall of Honor, which displays more than 360 photos of area veterans, will be available for public viewing during an open house Nov. 11 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the William T. Murphy Community Building, located across from Glenburn Home.

Linton Mayor and Navy veteran John Preble said he started working on the Hall of Honor last year.

“I established a non-profit called Veterans Hall of Honor focused on preserving the photos for permanent display,” Preble said.

The late Jim Shields and Janette (Shields) Evans of Shield’s Hardware started the project several years ago when they hung a photo of their veteran father. Community members then started bringing in photos of their loved ones who had served our country.

“So many photos were provided, they ended up filling the wall in the building in the back,” Preble said.

Initially Jim made frames for each of the photos. In the end, Shield’s employees purchased over 100 frames to complete the display.

When Shield’s Hardware closed, a permanent location for the photos was needed.

“The board at Glenburn approved and offered us the location at the William T. Murphy Community building which we readily accepted,” Preble said.

The project has received support from others in the community, even high school students.

“Jim Morrison with the Twin Rivers Building Trades offered to build and install display cases in which to mount the photos. This was done and the photos have been populated with the help of the Board of Directors and volunteers.”

If you’re looking for something to do on Veterans Day, stop by the William T. Murphy Community Building and experience the display.
