The stop and arrest of a reckless driver along State Road 54 west of Bloomfield Wednesday evening attracted the attention of passers-by, especially when the suspect dropped his drawers and mooned an officer.

Jameel Leslie Golden, 24, Bloomington, was arrested by Lt. Marvin Holt of the Bloomfield Police Department on Wednesday evening, May 27.

Lt. Holt was on patrol in Bloomfield, with BPD Deputy Marshal Brittney Ingram riding along, around 7 p.m. when he saw a tan 2002 Buick Rendezvous traveling at a high rate of speed. Golden was later identified as the driver and he had one female passenger riding with him.

Lt. Holt kept track of the vehicle from the area of SR 54 and Cold Spring Road until it turned south onto Judge Street then ran a stop sign at East Spring and South Washington streets then turned north on Washington. Although it may have stopped at Washington and Main Street (SR 54) for a traffic light, Lt. Holt said he next saw it headed west on Main/SR 54 when it went past Franklin Street at a high rate of speed.

Lt. Holt said he saw Golden pass a vehicle in a no-passing zone then pass another vehicle at Harrison Street. Holt said he was going 60 mph in a 35 mph zone and Golden was traveling faster because Golden was pulling farther away from him. Golden passed a couple more vehicles on the Veterans Memorial Bridge west of Bloomfield and Lt. Holt paced him going 90 mph for about half-a-mile but Golden was still pulling away.

When Golden was forced to slow down for a line of traffic, Lt. Holt was able to catch up and he hit the lights and siren and told his partner, Officer Ingram, they would be conducting a high risk stop.

Golden turned into the parking area of a former vet clinic, stopped and got out of his vehicle. Both BPD officers exited the patrol vehicle with their weapons drawn.

When Golden was ordered to show his hands and get them high in the sky and turn away from Lt. Holt, Golden hesitated and complied but then put his hands down and had to be given orders several times.

At one point, Golden allegedly pulled a magazine out of a pocket, threw it down, then pulled his shorts down to his ankles, bent over and said, “I don’t have a ----ing gun on me.” Lt. Holt said multiple vehicles were driving by and he ordered Golden to pull his pants back up several times before he did pull them up.

One of the passers-by had notified an off-duty officer this was going on and Bloomington Police Officer Jordan Hasler responded in his personal vehicle to assist.

Officers determined Golden’s passenger was extremely intoxicated. She was not arrested.

Golden said he knew he was driving without a license but said he didn’t know he had passed other vehicles and did not realize he was going so fast. His driver’s license was suspended and he had a prior conviction for driving while suspended.

When officers noticed one of Golden’s hands was bleeding, he said he had been shot in the hand by his passenger earlier in the evening when he was trying to show her how to shoot at a residence in the Solsberry area. An ambulance was called to check on his wound and clear him before he was transported to the Greene County Jail.

Officers reported finding a 9 mm Taurus handgun in the back seat of Golden’s vehicle, with no magazine in the gun.

Golden was booked in around 8:19 p.m. His bond was set at $2,500 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He has since posted $250 and been released from jail. The date of his initial hearing is not known but when he appears in court, he will be formally charged with:

  • Driving while suspended – a knowing violation with a prior conviction within 10 years, a Class A misdemeanor,

  • Carrying a handgun without a license, a Class A misdemeanor, and

  • Reckless driving at unreasonable speed that endangers safety, a Class C misdemeanor.
