A Bloomington man faces a misdemeanor theft charge after police allege he pumped gasoline at a Worthington convenience store and drove away without paying.

Charges were filed against Pablito Arellano Andrade, 34, on Monday, Aug. 24. He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 8 with a Spanish-speaking interpreter present, according to court records.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Worthington Police Officer Austin T. Shadoin was dispatched Aug. 16 to the Worthington Food Mart at 820 S. Commercial St. following a report of a gasoline theft.

A store employee told police that a man driving a silver Toyota Prius had left without paying for fuel. The employee also reported that the same man had allegedly taken gasoline without paying in June.

Shadoin reviewed the store’s surveillance footage and fuel records. According to the affidavit, the footage showed a man remove a nozzle, select a grade of gasoline and pump fuel without first attempting to pay.

After replacing the nozzle, the man reportedly entered the store to use the restroom. He then returned to the vehicle and drove south from the parking lot without paying, police said.

Investigators obtained the vehicle’s license plate number from a previous police report. State records identified Andrade as the registered owner, and Shadoin reported identifying him as the person shown in the surveillance footage.

He was arrested Aug. 17 and transported to the Greene County Jail. His bond was set at $1,000 surety with 10% cash allowed. He was released after posting $100.
