The Lyons Town Marshal is reminding residents of their responsibility to keep their dogs properly restrained after noticing an increase in dogs roaming freely throughout town.

Town Marshal Chandler Willard said he has recently observed a large number of dogs running at large within the town limits and is asking pet owners to help prevent potential safety hazards.

While many dogs are friendly, Willard said allowing them to roam unattended can create dangerous situations for motorists, pedestrians, children, other pets and the animals themselves.

"You may know your dog is friendly, but someone who doesn't know your dog has no way of knowing that," Willard said. "An unfamiliar dog running toward someone can be frightening and may cause them to react in a way that could result in injury to themselves or your pet."

Willard also reminded residents that Indiana law prohibits owners from knowingly or intentionally allowing their dogs to run at large. Under Indiana Code 15-20-1-4, dog owners are responsible for keeping their animals under control.

If a dog does get loose, Willard encourages owners to make every effort to safely retrieve the animal as quickly as possible.

"Keeping your dog properly restrained protects your pet, your neighbors and helps prevent unnecessary incidents," he said.

The marshal thanked residents for their cooperation in helping keep Lyons safe for both people and animals.
