Linton woman accused of hitting an officer near her eye
/A Linton woman who allegedly was yelling and screaming then struggled with an officer, hitting the officer near her eye, was taken into custody last Saturday morning.
Angel Leigh Ann Baughman, 21, Linton, was arrested by Deputy Chief Debbie McDonald of the Linton Police Department last Saturday, December 14.
When Baughman appeared in Greene Superior Court today, Thursday, December 19, she was charged with:
Disorderly conduct – engaging in fighting or tumultuous conduct, a Class B misdemeanor,
Resisting law enforcement – knowingly or intentionally forcibly resists, a Class A misdemeanor, and
Battery against a public safety official, a Level 6 felony.
Officer McDonald was dispatched to the home of a grandmother on 5th Street SE in Linton around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 14. The grandmother had been letting her grandson and his girlfriend, Angel Baughman, live in an apartment above her garage. Other officers had responded to the same home around 2 a.m. that same morning due to an argument between the grandson and Baughman.
When Officer McDonald arrived, she talked to the grandmother who said the arguing was keeping her up, she had to go to work and she just wanted them to leave, and when she went to the apartment, everything in the room had been broken. Baughman later said the grandson had only broken his own things. When Officer McDonald went to the apartment to talk to the couple, they were not there. They were standing on the other side of the neighbor’s privacy fence and would not talk to the officer.
Not long after that, Officer McDonald was dispatched back to the home after Baughman called to report the grandmother had hit her. McDonald said she saw red scratches on Baughman’s neck and chest and her shirt had been torn down the middle. McDonald reported Baughman was yelling and cussing at the grandmother, screamed an obscenity and raised both middle fingers but the officer was not sure if this comment and action was directed at her or the grandmother.
The situation led to Baughman being taken into custody but she allegedly tried to pull away. She ended up on the ground and in a short struggle, twisted and managed to hit Officer McDonald beside her right eye. Officer McDonald restrained Baughman in handcuffs with both hands behind her back and escorted Baughman to the patrol car. Baughman allegedly refused to get in and Officer McDonald then assisted Baughman into the patrol car.
Before Officer McDonald got to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department with Baughman, she was called back to the same house, this time on the report of the grandson allegedly pushing his grandmother against the side of the garage. GCSD Deputy Harvey Holt met the patrol vehicle at WRV School and completed the transport allowing McDonald to return to the scene.
When McDonald arrived back, the grandson was packing his things preparing to leave with another family member. And when McDonald talked again to the grandmother, she learned the grandmother had earlier heard the grandson tell Baughman to hit herself in the face hard before police were called and he would then say the grandmother had hit her. The two allegedly then went into the garage and when they came out, before the officer arrived earlier, Baughman had the red marks and her shirt was torn.
Around noon, Baughman was booked in to the Greene County Jail where her bond was set at $6,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed.
No information regarding any other criminal charges has been released.
