A Linton man faces drug and impaired-driving charges following a Sept. 8 traffic stop near Sunset Park Campground, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Billy Lee Knight, 69, was arrested at 7:41 p.m. on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Linton police Officer Lukis Haddix wrote that he and Officer Cade Herndon were patrolling near County Roads 1100 West and 200 North when they saw a black Ford Ranger registered to Knight. A records check reportedly showed Knight had an identification card rather than a driver’s license.

Officers stopped the truck near Sunset Park Campground. Knight reportedly said he was driving to pick up tires. Herndon allegedly saw an open alcohol container inside the vehicle, and Knight acknowledged drinking a beer.

According to the affidavit, Knight showed several signs of impairment during field sobriety exercises, including failing to follow instructions, missing heel-to-toe steps, taking the wrong number of steps, swaying and using his arms for balance.

A preliminary breath test registered a blood alcohol concentration of 0.009%, according to court records.

During a search of the vehicle, officers allegedly found a cigarette with a white crystalline substance on its end. The substance field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Police also reported finding suspected marijuana in a tube, a marijuana vape and a partially smoked marijuana cigarette on the passenger seat.

Knight was read Indiana’s implied-consent warning but reportedly refused chemical testing. Police obtained a search warrant signed by Judge Dena Martin, and a blood draw was conducted at Greene County General Hospital. The affidavit does not include the blood-test results.

Knight was taken to the Greene County Jail, where no bond was initially allowed.
