A 39-year-old Linton man is facing three felony charges following an investigation into an alleged domestic violence incident earlier this month.

Ren Daniel Barton was arrested Sept. 22 and faces charges of Level 5 felony domestic battery, Level 6 felony strangulation and Level 6 felony possession of methamphetamine, according to court documents.

The case stems from an incident reported shortly after 2 a.m. Sept. 10, when Greene County Dispatch received a 911 call from a female. According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Greene County Sheriff's Office Deputy Braxton Clark, dispatchers could hear an argument during the call, and the woman reported she had been strangled and assaulted.

Deputies located Ren Barton along County Road 1500 West. Barton told investigators the two had been arguing and alleged the female struck him while they were inside a Jeep. He denied assaulting her and said the only physical contact occurred as he attempted to block her from hitting him, according to the affidavit. Police documented injuries to Barton, including an injury to his lip and redness and scratches.

Deputies later met with the female, who provided a different account of the incident. She alleged Barton grabbed her neck with both hands during an argument after getting out of the Jeep.

She told investigators she was unable to breathe while her neck was being compressed but did not lose consciousness. Deputies reported observing redness around her neck, blood on her nose, a scratch on her leg, and other injuries, some of which she said were from an earlier incident.

During the investigation, the female also told deputies there could be methamphetamine in the Jeep and permitted officers to search the vehicle, according to the affidavit.

Deputies reported finding a modified plastic bottle and cut plastic straws beneath the driver's seat. A substance associated with the bottle field-tested positive for methamphetamine, according to court documents. The substance was taken into evidence.

Investigators spoke with Barton again following the vehicle search. He continued to deny assaulting the female and maintained that she had struck him before he exited the vehicle, according to the affidavit.

Barton was arrested Sept. 22 after a warrant was issued for his arrest on Sept. 17.

Barton has a prior conviction of domestic battery from January 2026. Earlier in September, he was convicted of possession of methamphetamine.
