Linton man arrested on failure-to-register charge
/A Linton man was arrested Wednesday on a warrant alleging he failed to update his address as required by Indiana’s sex offender registry law.
Aaron Joseph Beaver, 33, was arrested Sept. 23 on a warrant issued Sept. 22. He is charged with failure to register as a sex or violent offender with a prior conviction, a Level 5 felony.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Linton Police Chief Paul Clark first encountered Beaver in Linton’s Humphreys Park on July 17. City of Linton Park Superintendent Tom Robison had contacted Clark after receiving reports that someone had been staying overnight near the East Shelter House gazebo for several days, in violation of the park’s closing hours.
Beaver denied staying overnight at the park and told Clark he was staying at a residence at a First St. NW residence. Another individual reportedly confirmed that Beaver was staying at the residence with him and his family. Police were unable to verify whether Beaver had been staying in the park overnight, and Clark relayed the information to the Greene County sex offender registrar.
The investigation continued Aug. 24 after the owner of Anderson-Poindexter Funeral Home reported that someone had been sleeping in a tent near the alley south of the funeral home for approximately one week.
Clark located Beaver asleep inside a tent on property belonging to Breath of Life Church at 90 First St. NW. Beaver reportedly said he had the church’s permission to stay there but claimed he had arrived Aug. 21, which would have placed him within the required 72-hour reporting period.
A church representative confirmed Beaver had permission to stay on the property but reportedly told police he had been there for approximately one week. An employee of the funeral home later told police Beaver had camped there throughout the week of Aug. 17-24.
The Greene County sex offender registrar reported that Beaver’s registered address remained on Second St. SW as of the morning of Aug. 24. Beaver subsequently registered as homeless later that day, according to the affidavit.
Indiana law requires registered offenders to report an address change within 72 hours. The affidavit cites a 2023 Sullivan County conviction for failure to register as a sex or violent offender.
His bond was set at $10,000 surety with 10% cash allowed.
