Kaleb Chance Powell, 21, of Franklin, Ind., was arrested by Indiana State Police Trooper Richard Klun on Friday, December 28. His bond was set at $8,500 surety with ten percent allowed. He posted $850 cash to bond out and was scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court early today, Thursday, January 10.

Trooper Klun was northbound on I69 when he conducted a random vehicle registration status check on a gray 1992 Honda Accord and learned the driving privileges of the car’s registered owner were suspended with a status of habitual traffic violator.

Klun conducted a traffic stop and the driver, who was the registered owner, Kaleb Powell, said he was on his way to his girlfriend’s house in Evansville.

When Klun asked about the status of his driver’s license, Powell said he had specialized driving privileges and he provided the trooper with a court order authorizing Powell to drive from his home in Franklin to his work location in Indianapolis. But Powell was on his way to Evansville. Powell then explained he was kicked out of his parent’s residence in Franklin a week earlier and was then living with his girlfriend, but he told Klun he had not notified the court of the change.

Powell was placed under arrest for violation of his specialized driving privileges then he was searched and so was his vehicle prior to it being towed.

Trooper Klun reported that in the vehicle, he and another assisting trooper found a metal smoking device that field tested positive for marijuana, a small corner baggy that field tested positive as heroin and a syringe filled with a liquid.

Powell submitted to a blood draw – results are pending.

A criminal case was filed against Powell and when he appears in court for his initial hearing, he will be formally charged with:

  • Operating a vehicle with a Schedule I or II controlled substance in person’s body, a Class C misdemeanor,
