Greene County Sheriff's Department utilizing Flock Transparency Portal

The Greene County Sheriff's Department is now using the new Flock Transparency Portal, a tool designed to give the public greater insight into how the department's license plate reader technology is used to enhance public safety and assist in criminal investigations.

The portal provides information about the department's policies, usage statistics and accountability measures but does not allow public access to license plate numbers or any information related to specific vehicles or investigations.

According to the sheriff's department, Flock Safety technology is used to capture objective evidence while protecting individual privacy. Rather than continuously monitoring drivers, the system is primarily used to conduct retroactive searches to help investigators solve crimes after they have occurred. The technology can also generate real-time alerts when a vehicle associated with a wanted person or criminal investigation is detected.

The department said it has made its policies and usage statistics publicly available through the Transparency Portal to demonstrate how the technology is being used and the safeguards in place to ensure it is used appropriately.
