GCSD warns of telephone scammers targeting Greene County

The Greene County Sheriff’s Department is alerting the public of a telephone scam involving a caller who says he/she is notifying the recipient of a missed court date. According to the sheriff’s department, the Greene County Courts do not notify individuals that they have missed a court date.

According to the sheriff’s department, these types of calls have been received in the Linton, Lyons and Solsberry areas.

Although the caller’s identity is unknown, the caller’s number has been traced back to a landline call center.

A GCSD release says, “Unknown individuals are calling and notifying subjects that they have missed a court date. The caller is providing the victim a fictious court-assigned case number. The victim then disputes the court date or having knowledge of any legal issues. The caller then asks the victim to identify themselves by providing personal identification such as social security numbers, birthdates, addresses, etc.”

The sheriff’s department advised the victims to not provide any information and stressed that the courts in Greene County do not notify individuals if they have missed a court date.
