VIGO COUNTY - Officer Robert Shawn “Rob” Pitts, 45, was killed in the line of duty on Friday May 4, 2018, in Terre Haute. He was a 16-year veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department and prior to that was a six-year veteran of the Sullivan City Police Department. Rob was born June 16, 1972, in Vincennes, Ind. to George G. Pitts and Barbara Lynn (Pirtle) Pitts.

He is survived by his mother, Bobbi Noel (Ron); his father Greg Pitts (Sue); a daughter, Brooke Pitts; sons, Austin Pitts (fiancée Abby Mangram) and Dakota Pitts; sister, Kelli Jones (Corey); brother, Greg Pitts II (Brandi Wheeler); girlfriend, Carey Steele and her children Jake Steele and Evan Hills; grandmother, Carolyn McKinley; great-great grandmother, Maurine Gambill; nieces and nephews, Greggy Pitts, Jessica Pitts, Scottie Pitts, Madi Followell, Brody Wheeler, Briley Jones, and Jayce Jones; the mother of Austin and Brooke, Jennifer Pitts and several cousins, aunts, and uncles.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Milburn and Mildred Pirtle, Alfred and Margaret Pitts, and Larry “Little Red” McKinley.

Rob was a 1990 graduate of Sullivan High School, where he ran track. A 1996 graduate of the Law Enforcement Academy, a member of the F.O.P., the Special Response Team, the U.S. Marshals Task Force, and the International Unions of Police Associations. He enjoyed fishing, camping, shooting, four-wheeling and Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

Visitation will be Tuesday May 8, 2018, from 2:00 until 7:00 p.m. in ISU Hulman Center. Funeral services with full police honors will be Wednesday May 9, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. in ISU Hulman Center. The funeral procession will then proceed to Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan, where Officer Pitts will be laid to rest.
