Former employee accused of theft of over $7,000

A former employee of a business in eastern Greene County is accused of taking checks from the business checkbook, making them out to herself, forging the owner’s signature then cashing the checks worth over $7,000.

Christine Marie Andis, 23, Bloomington, is being summoned to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial charge of theft, a Class A misdemeanor, as a result of an ongoing investigation by Det. David Elmore of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.

Andis is a former employee of Harrell Homes on North State Road 45, Solsberry. She was doing bookkeeping/accounting work. Other than the owner of the business, she was the only employee who had access to the company’s business checks during the time she worked there but she quit on October 29, 2021.

After she quit, the owner determined six checks were missing and two of them had been written out to Andis with the owner’s signature forged – he called the sheriff’s department to report the theft.

According to Det. Elmore, one check was written out to Andis for “payroll” with the owner’s name on the signature line. That check was cashed, for $3,575.21. Another one was written and cashed for $3,805.41. Det. Elmore said the signature on the back of the checks appeared to be Christine Andis.

The owner said Andis still had the key to the office and he provided the detective with a receipt for $46.91 for the purchase of new locks to the office.

The summons sent to Andis will order her to be in Greene Superior Court on April 7 for her initial hearing.
