Gary Wayne Nelson

Gary Wayne Nelson, 77, of Switz City, passed away at his home on Thursday, January 15, 2026. Born in Linton, Indiana, on August 22, 1948, Gary lived a life defined by hard work, loyalty, and quiet strength.

A proud graduate of Switz City Central High School, Gary didn’t waste any time before answering the call to serve his country. He joined the United States Marine Corps, where he completed three tours in Vietnam. His bravery and dedication earned him lasting respect among his fellow Marines, and 3 Purple Hearts. After his honorable service, Gary continued his commitment to country and community by serving in the National Guard, where he achieved the rank of Second Lieutenant.

Gary built an honest living behind the wheel, spending his career as a truck driver - a job he loved for the sense of freedom and the open road it offered. He retired from Venture Logistics in Indianapolis with countless miles and stories under his belt.

Beyond his work and service, Gary found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, watching birds with his coffee, and tinkering on cars in the garage. A lifelong member of the American Legion in Lyons and the VFW in Linton, Gary cherished the camaraderie and friendships he found among fellow veterans.

Gary leaves behind his children, Michael (Holly) Nelson and Tina (Brian) Goodman; granddaughter, Samantha (Tony) Nelson; and his three great-grandchildren, Carter, Carson, and Jayce. He is also survived by his brothers, Kenny Nelson and Neil Nelson.

Private arrangements are being handled by Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton, through Walton Funeral Service.
